Reaction-Of Mice and Man
John Steinbeck wrote Of Mice and Man for lonely people by the characters in the novel. People excluded others who don’t fit their norm. It is human nature. In the novel, Curley is against big Lennie because he is short, Lennie gains no respect because he is retarded; people careless about Candy because he is old; crooks face racism because he is black; Curley’s wife has no power because she is a woman. All these make the characters in the novel lonely. That is what the author doesn’t want, but really it exists.
In the novel, we could see some good literary elements, such as foreshadowing and irony. John Steinbeck mentions the death of Candy’s old dog to reflect indirectly of the death of Lennie. After Lennie killed Curley’s wife by accident, they treat him exactly like Candy’s old dog. Lennie’s last name is small, which is obviously ironic. Lennie is strong and powerful, it is unfittable when people put his name and appearance together. In the other hand, it is exactly symbolize the mind of Lennie is really "small". John Steinbeck also gets readers’ emotion involved successfully. We sympathize write the characters in the novel. No matter they are white or strong, black or woman, they are all alone.
Of Mice and Man sharply reflects the corrupt social behavior at that time. White people are the powerful group in the society. They could kill people without wondering right or wrong. The bad thing about the book is the sad ending. George is a good guy with good heart, Lennie is innocent, but at the end Lennie has to be killed by his best friend.
I think this is a really good novel. I would like to recommend it to my friends. From the book we could improve our skill to use literary devices. We could know more about the labor classes in the early American society.
John Steinbeck is a good writer. I would like to read more of his novel. I have read his The Pearl too. I enjoy his way to write his novels. He is very successful in expressing his idea by things. I think I would learn some literary skill from his novel.
